VOICE AMONG VOICES

May it be that I sing with you.

May it be that I sing with you.

May it be that I sing with you.

Voice for the voiceless.

Voice among voices

With you.

May it be that I stand with you.

May it be that I stand with you.

May it be that I stand with you.

Voice for the voiceless.

Voice among voices

With you.

May it be that I walk with you.

May it be that I walk with you.

May it be that I walk with you.

Voice for the voiceless.

Voice among voices

With you.

May it be that I rise with you.

May it be that I rise with you.

May it be that I rise with you.

Voice for the voiceless.

Voice among voices

With you.

May it be that I sing with you.

May it be that I sing with you.

May it be that I sing with you.

Voice for the voiceless.

Voice among voices

With you.

NOT TODAY

I was talking with my friend

The other day, about this moment

And he said,

“Yeah, I know just what you mean,

Cause for longer than you’ve been alive,

I’ve been a player

In this showbiz machine.”

He told me a story Of a man he called “a pig.”

He said, “He tried to cheat me once

and he tried to cheat me big.”

Which smacked my gob

Because this man could not see what was so clearly true:

That this moment had nothing to do with him.

Every woman he’d ever known could say She, too.

But that’s the thing about Power:

It doesn’t have to know itself.

But lemme tell you In that moment

He sure missed an opportunity

To know me.

He could have said this:

"I have stood by.

I have stood still.

I have accepted gifts that weren’t given me

And took them as a sign of

An exemplary god’s will.

I have looked on.

I have looked away

And I’m ashamed to say

I didn’t do one

Goddamn Thing to change the scene -

Or myself - but not today."

I told this story to my friend and she said,

“Yeah I know just what you mean,

Cause for longer than you’ve been alive

I’ve been a woman

In this man machine.”

“But what’s more,” she said as she drank her cup of tea,

“It’s also true that for longer than you’ve been alive

I’ve been waiting

For a white woman to

Say those words to me.”

(So I said,)

"I have stood by.

I have stood still.

I have accepted gifts that weren’t given me

And took them as a sign of

An exemplary god’s will.

I have looked on.

I have looked away

And I’m ashamed to say

I didn’t do one

Goddamn Thing to change the scene -

Or myself - but not today.

Not today.

Not today

Cause I wanna change enough

To take a look at things

The way they really are

And say,

‘No, not today.’”

My friend nodded to me at the table and she drank her tea

And she left. I figured that my soul sad been seen

And been found both worthy and wanting.

Fair enough.

I don’t know what to do with that just yet,

What to cast off, what to keep.

But when in doubt, ask a poet.

And the poet said,

“Don’t go back to sleep.”

"I have stood by.

I have stood still.

I have accepted gifts that weren’t given me

And took them as a sign of

An exemplary god’s will.

I have looked on.

I have looked away

And I’m ashamed to say

I didn’t do one

Goddamn Thing to change the scene -

Or myself - but not today.

Not today.

Not today

Cause I wanna change enough

To take a look at things

The way they really are

And say,

‘No, not today.’

When you love someone like it's growing out of the ground...

When you love someone like it's growing out of the ground...

ISABELLE

Isabelle, I’ll build a mansion for you
Isabelle, I’m saving my dollars two by two
Isabelle, Someday we will live in peace
Isabelle, you and me

Mother Magdalena, Saints Martin, Paul, and John
Make sure we got our ticket
For this boat we’re travelling on

No there’s no mistaking
That the rain’s come pouring through
But we’re going two by two
Isabelle,
Me and You

Isabelle, I’ll build a mansion for you
Isabelle, I’m saving my dollars two by two
Isabelle, Someday we will live in peace
Isabelle, you and me

It’s early days, Izzy
So they’ll hate it if I say
I was born for you, Isabelle
I just don’t see another way
They’ll criticize our mansion
And our mothers, two by two
But they won’t see the truth
Just this:
Isabelle, me and you

Isabelle, I’ll build a mansion for you
Isabelle, I’m saving my dollars two by two
Isabelle, Someday we will live in peace
Isabelle, you and me

Today we’re minnows, Isabelle
But someday we’ll be grown
Maybe into mothers
Maybe into crones
The Land will not receive us,
But we’ll make another home
In numbers yet unknown,
Isabelle, all our own

Isabelle, I’ll build a mansion for you
Isabelle, I’m saving my dollars two by two
Isabelle, Someday we will live in peace
Isabelle, you and me

When I die
I’ll call you from the grave
With my pockets full of honey
And all of the money that I’ve saved
She’ll weigh my heart
And I will look her in the eye
Isabelle, I’ll remember you and I

Isabelle
Isabelle
Isabelle, I’ll remember You and I
